You may have heard some unwanted sounds coming from your car’s engine, Well this is clearly a sign that something is wrong with the engine.
An unusual sound such as knocking or ticking from engine usually comes when
- There is a lack of lubrication in engine parts.
- Some component of the engine has broken.
- Or something is about to break.
Some of the engines normally make ticking sound caused by electrical parts like solenoids, relays, and injectors. Also, the engine itself makes some noises when rotating at high RPM, but for the most part engine should always have a very soft ticking noise with no knocking issue.
In some of the car models if engine develops a knocking noise while driving there will be a red or amber light flashing on the dashboard to notify the driver that there is some problem. If the light is red then it is highly recommended to shut down the engine completely. If the light is amber then take it easy until you reach a workshop or car service station.
If your engine develops a knocking or ticking sound the first thing is to check the engine oil level, there may be a chance that your engine oil level is low.
Reasons why the engine oil level may be low
The most common cause of low level of engine oil is a pending regular service of your car. if this is the case then you need to get your car serviced from a car service station as soon as possible.
Another reason might be that you have an oil leakage. If you suspect you have an oil leak then check the place where you usually park your car. Most often you will find small oil drips or small puddles of oil on the ground. if in case you don’t see any visible oil leakage then you may have an internal oil leakage. Now there are lots of sources for internal oil leakages such as valve guide seals, o-rings, gaskets and piston rings. If the engine is burning the oil past the valve guide seals or piston rings then there will be a blueish smoke coming out from the engine while driving.
There is an another type of internal oil leakage called head gasket leak. Sometimes the head gasket can leak oil into the engine cylinder causing a blue smoke from the exhaust.
What to Do When Your Engine Makes These Noises?
Once the engine starts making these unusual noises & you have identified the issue there is no easy fix. you’ll need to dig deep into the engine to either fix the noise by replacing engine parts (camshaft or crankshaft) or replacing the complete engine. Once an engine runs low on oil to the point where the engine makes noise, it’s usually too late, the damage is done.
